Students’ Take: LKCMedicine Students Bring Care to Migrant Workers at Health Festival 2026

On 18th January 2026, Constructing Care Collaboration (CCC) held its annual Health Festival 2026 at Terusan Recreation Centre. We conducted health screening for approximately 300 migrant workers, with the help of more than 130 volunteers who came down to support our event. CCC is a student-led volunteer movement of medical students from LKCMedicine and NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, with the aim of serving the migrant worker population in Singapore.

Collaborating with volunteers from NHG Health Family Medicine Residency doctors, SIT Physiotherapy, NUS Dentistry and St. Andrew’s Migrant Worker Medical Centre, we served around 300 migrant workers at the health screening event.

Terusan Recreation Centre is a common recreational area for migrant workers located near Teban Gardens in the western part of Singapore. The screening included common modalities such as height and weight, blood pressure and blood glucose measurement, as well as more advanced services such as doctor’s consultation, dental screening and physiotherapy services.

Many migrant workers had been dealing with chronic issues without the opportunity to seek medical attention until the screening, while some others were also found to have had previously undetected medical conditions, such as high blood pressure or high blood sugar.

The migrant workers were also educated on healthier lifestyle habits through fun and interactive games. To cap off their screening, they each received a gift bag with some simple snacks and pain relief patches.

To help bridge the language barrier and improve the experience for the migrant workers, the screening had the support of interpreters for various languages.

Hear more from our participants and organisers:
“It was an incredibly enriching experience to have volunteered at CCC's Migrant Worker Health Carnival this year. It was definitely a challenge in communicating with little shared language, but I found it to be a good learning opportunity, and by the end I had figured out small ways to help bridge the gap through non-verbal communication! It was very heartening to see the number of brothers coming down for the screening and we hope that they found it meaningful too!”, said Richard Liu, a Year 2 student from LKCMedicine, who served as an usher for the dental screening station, helping to facilitate the flow of participants.
Shourjo Chakravarty, a Year 2 student who assisted at the Doctor Consultation station and with Bengali translation, reflected: “The CCC screening was a deeply fulfilling milestone in my medical journey. Seeing the smiles on our migrant brothers' faces brought me immense joy and reaffirmed my passion for service.”
Dr Judith Charles, our co-organiser from NHG Family Medicine, was instrumental in organising this event, liaising with our doctors and executing the health screening at the venue. She shared: “It was truly heartening to see everyone take time out of their busy schedules – whether from school/exams or work – to come together so willingly and cheerfully to serve our migrant brothers. Participating in such initiatives, even during medical school, deepens our understanding of medicine as not just a discipline, but as a calling to serve our community with compassion. Thank you once again to all our medical student volunteers for your time, dedication and spirit of service!”
“We were given the incredible privilege to serve close to 300 migrant brothers, and it was encouraging to witness community partners from various organisations coming together! We look forward to serving our migrant brothers and engaging volunteers for future health screenings as well,” enthused Sanjuana Dharmaraj, Project Director of the event who is a Year 2 student at LKCMedicine.
We are delighted to have had such a large turnout of both migrant workers and volunteers for this event, and we extend our deepest gratitude to our partner organisations for helping to support this event and make it a resounding success!
