Singapore’s education system is internationally recognised for its excellence, and the National Institute of Education (NIE) has been at the heart of this success. For over 70 years, NIE has played a pivotal role in initial teacher preparation and continual professional development, equipping future educators with the skills, knowledge, and values needed to thrive in a dynamic educational landscape. Grounded in strong educational research, NIE prepares teachers and learners alike to adapt confidently to change and innovation.
The Art Major is designed to develop learners’ competencies in Visual Art through a strong foundation in studio practice and critical studies. Students engage with a diverse range of visual art courses spanning 2D and 3D media, contemporary digital technologies, and art theories. Learning takes place in well-equipped, purpose-built studios, guided by accomplished artists and experts in the field.
The programme culminates in an arts-based research project, where students develop their personal artistic voice and produce a body of work for public exhibition—preparing them to become confident, independent practitioners and reflective educators in the visual arts.
NIE is ranked #3 in Asia and #8 globally for Education in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
NIE’s programme comprises courses on specialised subject knowledge in at least one academic discipline, education and pedagogy courses for effective teaching.
Student teachers can gain international perspectives on education, through our International Practicum, Semester Exchange and Service and Leadership Training programmes.
Altruistic virtues are also infused in our curriculum. For example, our student teachers can reach out and render service to the community through our Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL) projects.
Graduands will receive a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Art and Education conferred by Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
It is a sponsored undergraduate programme by the Ministry of Education.
