Topic

3D Concrete Printing for Structural Applications: From Research to Realization

About the Seminar

Over the past decade, 3D concrete printing (3DCP) has evolved from a laboratory innovation into a viable construction method, with a steadily growing number of realized projects worldwide. However, its application in load-bearing structures remains limited, restricting the technology from reaching its full potential.

This talk presents how Witteveen+Bos integrates experimental research, digital workflows, and structural engineering to design and deliver load-bearing 3DCP structures, including houses, bridges, and infrastructure elements. Key topics include material behaviour, structural design, and compliance with existing codes and standards, while also highlighting the key challenges that still need to be addressed.

About the Speaker

Dr. HE Shan is a structural engineer at Witteveen+Bos and a researcher at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, working at the intersection of material innovation, structural engineering, and digital construction. His work focuses on the development and structural application of advanced cementitious materials with an emphasis on translating experimental and numerical insights into practical design approaches for engineering practice.

His research investigates the multi-scale mechanics of concrete, particularly the behaviour of interfaces and connections between different concrete compositions and reinforced concrete structural elements. Dr. He is an alumnus of NTU CEE, where he obtained his Master of Engineering, and later received his PhD (cum laude) in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences from Delft University of Technology.
