ABCC-2026-001: “Behind The Green Curtain: Evaluating The Sustainability Claims of SK E&S”
Category: Accounting
Abstract: This case study examines greenwashing risks in corporate sustainability reporting through the experience of SK E&S, a major South Korean energy company accused of misrepresenting the carbon footprint of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations. It analyses the use of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS), the quality of greenhouse gas disclosures, and the implications for investor decision-making and sustainable finance. The case highlights ethical, regulatory, and financial consequences of overstated environmental claims. In addition, the case encourages critical evaluation of transparency, accountability, and credibility in sustainability reporting.
