Learning & Teaching @NIE

Learning and Teaching @NIE is grounded in a holistic framework that brings together NIE’s pedagogical propositions, guiding both teaching and research. At its core, this framework supports faculty in adopting effective pedagogies, modelling values, skills, and dispositions central to NIE education, and fostering 21st Century competencies as the key learning outcomes.

Let us turn these ideas of the holistic approach into concrete, practice-driven experiences that empower faculty to improve their teaching and directly influence student learning outcomes. In-Learning provides the structured opportunities for faculty to put this vision into practice. It does this by:

  • Professional Development in Action: Offering professional development workshops, where faculty actively refine and improve their teaching.
  • Research-Informed Practice: Helping faculty translate insights into classroom strategies, ensuring teaching is evidence-based.
  • Continuous Reflection and Feedback: Creating spaces for faculty to evaluate what works and experiment with innovative pedagogies.
  • Modelling NIE’s Values: Encouraging educators to exemplify the skills, dispositions, and values central to NIE’s mission while guiding students to develop 21st Century competencies.

Three Key Pillars of Learning and Teaching @ NIE

The framework rests on three key pillars:

  1. 4 Key Principles of Learning @NIE – These principles emphasise meaningful engagement, collaborative knowledge-building, scaffolding through expert guidance, and ownership of learning. They reflect the needs of learners in the Knowledge Age and shape how educators are empowered to put these principles into practice.

  1. EMIC @NIE – To address the needs of 21st-century learners, NIE advances learning experiences that are Experiential, Multimodal, Inquiry-based, and Connected (EMIC). With state-of-the-art facilities and technologies grounded in strong pedagogical foundations, NIE provides holistic and future-ready learning environments.

  1. 4 Key Attributes of an Effective Teacher @NIE – NIE envisions effective teachers as role models who embody Calling, Care, Courage, and Creativity. Through field activities, community engagement, expert dialogues, and creativity-based projects, learners are nurtured to practice these attributes from the start of their journey.

Together, these elements underscore NIE’s commitment to advancing learning and teaching, while preparing both faculty and learners to thrive in a rapidly changing educational landscape.

As the Centre for Innovation in Learning (IN-Learning), we champion this initiative by empowering faculty to design tech-enabled, learner-centred, and engaging learning experiences. We collaborate with educators to explore new-generation educational technologies and co-create innovative solutions powered by AI and learning analytics.
