Ngiam Family Professorship in Chinese Studies (2024)
Made possible by a gift from Mr and Mrs Ngiam Tong Yuen and their family in 2024, the Ngiam Family Professorship in Chinese Studies supports research and teaching that deepen understanding of Chinese heritage and promote cultural dialogue within their host countries and the Chinese diaspora in the ASEAN region. Mr and Mrs Ngiam are long-time supporters of education and active volunteerism.
In particular for Singapore, the Professorship aims to uphold the rich tradition of cultural stewardship and academic excellence that enriches Singapore’s social harmony and intellectual vibrancy.
The Professorship provides recognition for outstanding faculty in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at NTU, to attract and retain assistant professors who will assume teaching and research leadership roles in the field of Chinese Studies.
Ong Tiong Tat Chair Professorship in Metabolic Research (2018)
The Ong Tiong Tat Chair Professorship in Metabolic Research, formerly known as The Ong Tiong Tat Chair Professorship in Diabetes Research, was established in 2018 with contributions from the Irene Tan Liang Kheng Memorial Fund.
The Fund was set up in honour of the late couple Madam Irene Tan Liang Kheng and Mr Ong Tiong Tat, who strongly believed in the value of education.
The Professorship helps further LKCMedicine’s efforts in strengthening its research into diabetes and other metabolic disorders, in line with the Singapore government's call for a war on diabetes.
Peter Lim Professorship in Peace Studies (2014)
The Peter Lim Professorship in Peace Studies was launched in June 2014 during the inauguration of the Studies in Inter-Religious Relations in Plural Societies programme at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS).
The Professorship was established through a gift from Mr Peter Lim, a well-known Singaporean philanthropist. He hopes that his donation can bring together distinguished scholars and thought leaders to study how Singapore can further preserve and promote the existing harmonious relations amongst its different communities, so that the nation will continue to enjoy peace and harmony.
The endowment will enable the appointment of a top global expert who will lead RSIS’s development in peace studies curriculum and research strategies.

Professor Angela Goh Career Development Professorship in Computer Science and Engineering (2023)
The Professor Angela Goh Career Development Professorship in Computer Science and Engineering was established in 2023 as part of NTU School of Computer Science & Engineering (SCSE – now known as College of Computing and Data Science)’s 35th anniversary celebrations.
Emeritus Professor Angela Goh is the former Chair of SCSE and a stalwart supporter of women in Computer Science and female leadership in NTU. She served as Associate Provost (Faculty Affairs) from 2011 to 2017 and Acting Chair of the then-School of Computer Engineering from 2007 to 2010.
The Professorship aims to recognise outstanding female faculty at early or mid-stages of their career and to foster academic excellence among SCSE faculty.

Ruth Wong Visiting Professorship (2015)
The Ruth Wong Visiting Professorship was set up at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in 2015 in honour of the late Dr Ruth Wong Hie King, founding director of the then Institute of Education. Dr Wong was celebrated for transforming Singapore’s teacher training and curriculum in the 1970s.
The Visiting Professorship invites accomplished academics in teacher education to undertake residencies at NIE, where they lead lectures, curriculum workshops, and collaborative research. Each appointee also delivers a Ruth Wong Lecture, often featured during NIE’s flagship “Redesigning Pedagogy” conference, inviting reflection and innovation among educators.
Amongst the Visiting Professors appointed are Professor Lin Goodwin (Columbia University), Professor Clare Kosnik (University of Toronto), Professor John Loughran (Monash University), Professor Elaine Munthe (University of Stavanger) and Professor Allison Littlejohn (University College London).

S. Rajaratnam Professorship in Strategic Studies (1998)
The S. Rajaratnam Professorship in Strategic Studies at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) was inaugurated in 1998 in honour of Singapore’s founding Foreign Minister, Mr Sinnathamby Rajaratnam, for his distinguished services to the nation.
The late Mr Rajaratnam was pivotal in establishing Singapore's foreign policy framework during its early years of sovereignty. Alongside his foreign affairs portfolio, he also served as Minister for Culture from 1959 to 1965, Minister for Labour from 1968 to 1971, Deputy Prime Minister from 1980 to 1985, and Senior Minister from 1985 to 1988.
The Professorship enables RSIS to invite distinguished scholars in strategic studies and related fields to participate in its activities. This helps the school increase its international linkages as well as benefit from the knowledge, experience and wisdom of eminent scholars appointed to the chair.

Shaw Foundation Chair in Business (1985)
The Shaw Foundation Pte in Singapore was set up in 1957 by the Shaw brothers with the overriding principle that wealth contributed by society should be returned and in generous measures. One of the world’s largest philanthropic organisations, the Foundation’s substantial giving has bolstered education, healthcare, and cultural institutions across the region.
The endowed Shaw Foundation Chair in Business at the Nanyang Business School was made possible through a generous gift from the Foundation in 1985. The Professorship supports NTU’s business faculty in advancing research and teaching excellence, particularly in the fields of business management and leadership, while fostering thought leadership that contributes to the development of future business leaders and the broader academic community.
Since August 2018, Professor Jason Shaw, Head of Division of Leadership, Management, and Organisation at NBS, has held this appointment.
SNEC/SERI Professorship in Ophthalmic Engineering & Technology (2019)
The Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) jointly established the SNEC/SERI Professorship in Ophthalmic Engineering & Technology at NTU in 2019 to drive translational innovation in ophthalmic science, ultimately enhancing patient care and healthcare delivery in the field of vision and eye health.
This Professorship is dedicated to advancing research and education in the emerging field of ocular engineering. The appointed professor plays a pivotal role in mentoring emerging researchers and fostering impactful research collaborations between NTU and SNEC/SERI.
The inaugural recipient of this Professorship is Professor Leopold Schmetterer, appointed in August 2020. Prof Schmetterer is also the Head of Ocular Imaging and Scientific Director at SERI.
SNEC/SERI Professorship in Translational Ophthalmic Engineering (2023)
With a gift in 2023 to enhance education and research at NTU, the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) jointly established the SNEC/SERI Professorship in Translational Ophthalmic Engineering.
The Professorship aims to strengthen collaboration between SNEC/SERI and NTU in the field of ocular engineering research. The appointed professor will engage in joint research initiatives in translational ophthalmic engineering across both institutions, contributing to impactful advancements in ophthalmic science and healthcare delivery.
SP Group Professorship (2019)
National power grid operator SP Group established a strategic partnership with NTU in 2019 to advance research and talent development in the energy sector.
The contribution supports the SP Group Professorship, which appoints outstanding faculty members whose research tackles critical challenges in energy systems, resilience, and electricity network robustness. Recipients contribute deep expertise to the SP Group-NTU Joint Laboratory, working on asset health modelling, failure-mode analysis, condition monitoring, and risk-based planning to strengthen grid reliability.
