Research Brief

Yanmeng's study examines how Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) reinterprets traditional aesthetics in contemporary Chinese animation, with a focus on the Shanghai Animation Film Studio and its Chinese School of Animation. Drawing on literature review, case analysis and qualitative methods, she investigates AIGC’s role in character design and the use of “negative space” in Chinese animation, as well as its impact on visual narration and cultural representation. Her research argues that AIGC not only revitalises traditional Chinese aesthetics but also introduces new tensions and innovations in the digital age, opening up theoretical and practical pathways for sustaining the artistic legacy of Chinese animation.
