Chinese Phonetics (Hanyu Pinyin) is the official romanisation system for Mandarin Chinese. It helps make pronunciation clearer and Chinese typing easier on phones and computers. This programme is designed for anyone who wishes to strengthen their Pinyin foundation for everyday or professional use, enhance digital communication, or gain confidence in guiding children’s pronunciation and early literacy.

Course Objectives 

  • Recognise and apply initials, finals, and tones with confidence
  • Strengthen accuracy and clarity in Mandarin pronunciation 
  • Learn to use Pinyin input methods for typing on computers and mobile devices
  • Build confidence in spelling and typing through structured practice exercises 

Course Structure  


Introduction to Chinese Phonetics 

  • Initials, finals, and syllables 
  • Tones and tone sandhi 
  • Differentiating similar sounds and tones 
  • Pronunciation practice with disyllabic and trisyllabic words, neutral tones, and retroflex syllables

Enhanced Level on Chinese Phonetics 

  • Review and strengthen initials, finals, and tones
  • Tips for faster and more efficient Pinyin input 
  • Practice with input systems on various platforms (mobile and desktop) 
  • Advanced typing and pronunciation drills to build fluency 

Course Details  

  • Mode of Delivery: In-person at NTU@one-north campus
  • Medium of Instruction: Chinese / English (Minimal)  
  • Course Schedule: Six weekly sessions
    Tuesdays: 7 PM – 10 PM | Fridays: 9 AM – 12 PM
  • Duration: 18 hours (6 sessions) per course 
  • Post-Course Test: Internal test is conducted during the last lesson
